Best Places to Visit in Asia

Asia is the world’s largest and most diverse continent — a place where neon megacities sit an hour from silent rice terraces, and a $2 bowl of noodles can outshine a Michelin dinner. If you’re planning your first trip or your fifteenth, here are the best places to visit in Asia right now, and what makes each one worth your flight time.

1. Kyoto, Japan — Tradition at Its Most Refined

Kyoto is Japan slowed down. With over 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines, it rewards travelers who wander instead of sprint. Walk the vermilion tunnel of torii gates at Fushimi Inari at sunrise, sip matcha in a Gion teahouse, and time your visit for cherry blossoms in April or the fiery maples of November.

Best time to go: March–April or October–November.

2. Hanoi & Ha Long Bay, Vietnam — Chaos and Calm in One Trip

Hanoi’s Old Quarter is a sensory rush: motorbikes, sizzling bun cha, and coffee thick enough to stand a spoon in. Three hours east, Ha Long Bay flips the mood entirely — nearly 2,000 limestone karsts rising out of emerald water. Book an overnight cruise, or head to quieter Lan Ha Bay to escape the crowds.

Best time to go: October–December.

3. Bali, Indonesia — More Than a Beach Cliché

Yes, Bali is popular. It’s also still magic if you go beyond Kuta. Base yourself in Ubud for jungle, yoga, and the Tegalalang rice terraces, then move north to Amed or Sidemen for a version of the island that hasn’t been Instagrammed to death.

Best time to go: April–October (dry season).

4. Chiang Mai, Thailand — Best Value in Asia

Ancient temples, misty mountains, world-class street food, and a cost of living that stretches a budget for weeks. Chiang Mai is where backpackers, digital nomads, and food obsessives all quietly agree. Don’t miss khao soi and the Sunday Walking Street market.

Best time to go: November–February.

5. Singapore — The Easiest Introduction to Asia

Spotless, safe, and effortlessly navigable, Singapore is the perfect first stop or layover. Gardens by the Bay, Hawker Chan, and the Peranakan shophouses of Katong deliver a compact, high-density hit of Southeast Asia.

Best time to go: Year-round.

6. Jaipur, India — Color You Have to See in Person

The Pink City is India at full volume: Amber Fort at dawn, the honeycomb façade of Hawa Mahal, and bazaars overflowing with textiles and spice. Pair it with Delhi and Agra for the classic Golden Triangle.

Best time to go: November–March.

Planning Your Asia Trip

A few practical notes: most Southeast Asian countries offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry for many passports, but check current rules before booking. Shoulder season (May–June, September) means fewer crowds and lower prices. And don’t over-plan — two countries done well beats five done fast.

Wherever you start, Asia has a way of pulling you back. The only real mistake is booking a trip that’s too short.
